LEGOLAND® named Outstanding Experience

“Unlike last year, there were so many unique experiences and great attractions, it was just really hard to pick just one. We thought that we had it nailed down to another attraction, then we walked through the gates of Legoland Florida. I was a kid again, squealing in delight at all the amazing Lego models, all of the great fun rides, and just floored by the way that the park transformed the old Cypress Gardens into an actual Theme Park that people lined up for! The beauty of Cypress Gardens was kept intact, while an all new park sprung to life with something to do for just about everyone. Sure, the park is aimed at little kids, and if you go without one you’ll be sorely disappointed, but with all the models, shows and coasters it’s a definite must see park. The “Model Citizens” are also very enthusiastic and extremely friendly, almost more than any other park we had been to this year. Plus the park has already announced expansion plans, has plans they haven’t announced and has been so successful over the holiday season that they had to close for capacity, and extend hours several times. This park has already done great things, and we feel that there will be many more great things to come!” - Behind the Thrills

LEGOLAND® rakes in first award

LEGOLAND® Florida has been selected as the winner of the Florida Urban Forestry Council's 2011 Friends of our Urban Forest Awards Program in the category of OUTSTANDING PROJECT. The awards selection committee felt that the LEGOLAND® Florida project efforts stood above all other applicants in exemplifying excellence in Urban Forestry throughout the State of Florida. MorrisTerra along with ValleyCrest Design maintained 80% of the existing trees on site, often redesigning or relocating attractions and buildings to ensure that the trees would remain. In addition, the team relocated 20 mature specimens within the property, creating an instant “has been there forever” feeling in parts of the park, and improving the character of the spaces. The trees are one of, if not THE most important element in the feeling created at opening like no other park.

We are most pleased to announce that MorrisTerra has won 2 design awards from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for 2011. An Award of Honor has been bestowed upon both Thornton Park Central (our office is part of this development) and Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
The Florida Chapter will celebrate all award winning firms and students during its Annual Conference being held at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. The Annual Design Awards Gala is scheduled for 6:00 PM Friday, July 14, 2011 and attendance is open to all conference registrants and the general public.
Thornton Park Central, the first modern “New Urban” mixed use project built in Downtown Orlando, is a true trendsetting project that has become an Orlando icon and the catalyst for an urban transformation of the Thornton Park and Eola South neighborhoods. The Landscape Architect’s broad vision and approach fostered the creation of a memorable, lively, urban pedestrian environment with a strong sense of place, that is first and foremost, a place for people.
Marina da Glória is the key northern anchor to Landscape Architect Roberto Burle Marx’ famous Parque do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. At the core of the solution is the creation of a place for people along the Rio waterfront respectful of Burle Marx’ iconic spiral marina. The concept unifies all design elements into a harmonious and elegant solution inspired by the works of the Brasilian Master and the unique landforms of Guanabara Bay.

Morris Terra is proud to announce that Todd Marshall McCurdy, Principal, and Director of Landscape Architecture and Planning at Morris Architects | Morris Terra, has been selected for induction into the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) distinguished Council of Fellows. Fellowship is among the highest honors ASLA may bestow and recognizes the significant contributions Mr. McCurdy has made to the profession and the public through his exceptional accomplishments in planning and design demonstrating a mastery of the art, stewardship and the social responsibility of landscape architecture, with significant impact on the public and the profession.
The 2010 ASLA Council of Fellows investiture ceremony will be held on Sunday evening, September 12, in Washington, D.C. Following the investiture ceremony, the new Fellows may use the suffix “FASLA” to denote this high honor.

Todd McCurdy was nominated in the Works Category by the Florida Chapter for his dedication to the art and craft of landscape architecture. He is inspired to preserve and integrate elements of local culture into his designs as he translates those stories into creative and responsible design solutions. By working closely with the client and community members, he takes the time to understand each project's goals and challenges so that his landscapes educate, generate revenue, and protect our natural resources. His is a landscape architecture that improves as well as beautifies the lives of people who experience his work. Mr. McCurdy has focused this passion in locations as diverse as Saudi Arabia, China, Vietnam, and the Americas. He earned his Bachelor of Science in landscape architecture from The Ohio State University.

2009 Florida ASLA Awards

We've just been told that we have won awards from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for two projects this year. An Award of Honor for the Bai Dat Do Masterplan, Phu Quoc Island, Kiên Giang Province, Vietnam; and an Award of Merit for the mixed use World Village of Grapevine in Grapevine, Texas. It is a great honor to be recognized - out of 70 total entries, 17 professional awards were given, and we are honored to receive two of them. Presentation of Awards will occur during the Florida Chapter ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo to be held July 23-25 in Ft. Myers, FL.
